Compass
“This came from the Compass Rose, a boat that we salvaged at Point Reyes National Seashore in the late 70s / early 80s. It was a salmon fishing or crabbing boat based out of Bodega Bay. The guy had gone out fishing, it was the end of the day, when he would normally head back to shore, but it was such a nice day that he decided he would anchor off of North Beach, spend the night, and go fishing again in the morning. In the middle of the night his anchor dragged and the boat washed up onto the beach in the surf. The boat healed over, he woke up immediately. Because it was a wood boat, the planks sprang up. He called the coast guard right away, “Mayday! Mayday!” They came and rescued him. It was a wreck and because it was Point Reyes national Sea Shore, you can’t leave anything there, it’s a national park, and so my buddy and I ended up burning the boat on the beach. We’d go out at low tied with a bulldozer, crunch the boat up, and drag pieces back to the beach where we’d burn them away. All the metal parts were reclaimed: one of the local farmers took the engine and the transmission and used it for who knows what. I salvaged as much as I could use, myself. It was a real shame for the guy. The Compass Rose was a really nice older boat, probably built in the 40s.”
